Nepal Death of Ex-PM Jhalanath Khanal’s Wife and Political Instability

Nepal Gen-Z Protests 2025: Political Crisis and Violence

In September 2025, Nepal is facing severe political instability. The Gen-Z movement, which originally started with demands for social justice, anti-corruption measures, and online freedom, suddenly turned violent. The protests escalated after security forces killed 19 youths on Monday, intensifying the unrest across the country.

During this period, Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, the wife of former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, was critically injured when protesters set their house on fire. She was later taken to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries. This tragic incident highlights the human cost of the ongoing protests and the extreme targeting of political figures.

The violence has not only affected former leaders but also government infrastructure. Protesters set fire to the Parliament, President’s Office, Singha Durbar, Supreme Court, Special Court, district courts, and the Attorney General’s office. The residences and offices of high-profile political figures, including the Prime Minister, President, and former ministers, were also attacked. This demonstrates that the unrest is challenging political and administrative authority directly.

The protests have severely impacted citizens. Tribhuvan International Airport was completely shut down, disrupting transportation and business activities. Schools and colleges have been closed, affecting students’ education. Ordinary citizens face threats to personal safety and daily life due to the widespread unrest.

The Nepali Army and police have been deployed to restore order and protect key locations. Security forces are actively monitoring government buildings, the homes of political leaders, and border areas. However, the large-scale violence shows the limits of law enforcement in controlling the protests.

The Gen-Z movement is primarily driven by demands for anti-corruption measures, political reform, and social justice. Young activists, especially from the Gen-Z generation, are leading the protests using social media platforms to organize. The violent escalation is largely a response to the deaths of young protesters and widespread dissatisfaction with long-standing political leadership.

In conclusion, the Nepal Gen-Z protests represent both a political and humanitarian crisis. The attacks on former political leaders and government infrastructure show the severity of the situation. While the movement could potentially bring political change, uncontrolled violence threatens national stability, citizen safety, and governance. Dialogue between political leaders, civilian protection, and effective intervention by security forces are essential for restoring peace and stability in Nepal.
